According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Miami Marlins manager Skip Shoemaker has informed his players that they will not be staying in Miami. The decision means the 44-year-old field manager will leave the club after two seasons.

Shoemaker also informed the team that he would miss the final two games of the season due to a death in his family, according to multiple reports. Shoemaker broke the news to his players after the Marlins’ 15-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

Shoemaker joined the Marlins in 2023 and helped the team go 83-78 that season and advance to the playoffs for the fourth time in history. As a result, Shoemaker won the National League Manager of the Year Award in 2023. Miami was ultimately swept by the Philadelphia Phils in the wild card round.

Marlins general manager Kim Ng, who also helped lead the team to an unexpected postseason run, resigned in October as the team considered hiring a president of baseball operations to replace her. According to Passan, Shoemaker’s contract has since been restructured and his team option for 2025 has been removed.

Miami had an even more lackluster 2024 season, finishing with the worst record in the National League at 60-100, but Shoemaker remains a top candidate for the league’s other vacant manager’s position. Very likely. Passan said Shoemaker is expected to be a candidate for the vacant position with the Cincinnati Reds, where he spent two years of his 11-year career as a player, and the Chicago White Sox, who lost a record-breaking 121st game on Friday. are.

The Marlins end their season against the Blue Jays this weekend. With Shoemaker gone, bench coach Luis Urueta will lead the team in his place.
