Michigan QB Jack Tuttle medically retired from football after recent concussion

Michigan quarterback Jack Tuttle is calling it a career.

Tuttle announced on social media Monday night that he would be retiring midway through the season due to health reasons. The announcement came as Tuttle sat out the Wolverines’ 24-17 win over Michigan State on Saturday, apparently due to a concussion.

It’s unclear when he sustained the injury, but Tuttle said it was the fifth time in his career.

“Unfortunately, my recent experience enduring my fifth concussion has revealed the painful truth that I must prioritize my health,” Tuttle wrote in part. “Throughout my college career, I have battled numerous injuries that have resulted in me making the difficult choice to step away from the game I love.”

Tuttle returned to Michigan this fall for his seventh season with eligibility. He started his career at Indiana University and transferred to back up JJ McCarthy during last season’s national championship run.

He was expected to be the Wolverines’ starter this season, but he went down with a right elbow injury late last year and did not fully recover by early this fall.

Tuttle made his first start against Illinois on October 19, but was limited to 20-of-32 shooting and had one interception in a 21-7 loss. He replaced Alex Orge, who struggled early in the game against Washington the previous week.

However, Tuttle did not play in Saturday’s game against the Spartans. Davis Warren started in his place and led them to victory. Tuttle was previously ruled out of the game, but the reason was not disclosed. Warren is Michigan’s third starting QB this season.

Tuttle has thrown a total of seven touchdowns and eight interceptions in 23 games over six seasons, completing just under 60 percent of his passes.

“I’m sad to end this chapter, but my passion for football will always be a part of me,” he wrote. “I am committed to finding another role within the game and intend to pursue a coaching role.”

Michigan State will play No. 1 Oregon State next Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, CBS). The Wolverines currently have a 5-3 record, but must play both No. 13 Indiana and No. 4 Ohio State on the road in their final four games of the season.
