(Reuters) – Microsoft said on Monday that Sebastien Bubeck, vice president of GenAI research, is leaving the company to join OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.
It was unclear what role Bubeck would play at the Microsoft-backed AI startup.
“Sebastian has decided to leave Microsoft to advance his efforts in developing AGI,” a Microsoft spokesperson said, adding that the company looks forward to continuing its relationship with Bubeck through his work with OpenAI. He added that he is doing so.
Bubeck did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for confirmation.
According to the Information, which first reported his departure, most of his co-authors who worked on research papers on Microsoft’s Phi LLM, which is smaller than traditional large-scale language models (LLMs), will remain at Microsoft to develop the model. He plans to continue.
The development follows a series of departures from OpenAI, including that of longtime chief technology officer Mira Murati in September.
CEO Sam Altman denied any connection between his resignation and the company’s planned restructuring.
