NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – The Nebraska Department of Health Services is raising awareness about the dangers of lead in Nebraska communities.
The department promotes prevention strategies through the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The grant-funded program encourages families to practice testing and educating their children and homes.
“We learned how lead and degraded lead can be found in lead-based paint, which is a common source of lead in Nebraska,” said Nebraska DHHS epidemiologist Derry Stover. said. “This substance is still present in consumer products that can be purchased here and online, so understanding where those lead risks come from is the first step to prevention.”
DHHS recommends that parents and caregivers who wish to have their children tested for lead in their blood should consult a physician before undergoing treatment to discuss what to physically check if they are exhibiting symptoms of lead poisoning. He said there is.
“If someone has lead poisoning or has high lead levels in their blood, we encourage those members of the public, their parents, and their caregivers to first contact their health care provider to see if their lead levels have decreased. We encourage you to have a follow-up visit with your health department,” Stover said.
DHHS recommends that anyone with further questions or concerns call 402-471-3121.
