TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – A West Alabama community college has partnered with a major automaker in an agreement that will create a pathway for students to work at auto dealerships across the country.
Some say it could also help companies facing an aging workforce.
Shelton State Community College has reached an agreement with American Honda Manufacturing to become a regional training center for Honda’s dealer network.
This program is called the “Honda PACT Program.” PACT stands for Professional Automotive Career Training.
We offer state-of-the-art automotive technician training that allows students to become certified Honda and Acura technicians.
Students are also required to complete an internship at a local Honda or Acura dealership.
Graduates of the program are eligible to work at one of these dealerships nationwide.
“Most of the technicians out there are nearing retirement age, and we just need people to fill them in and keep them going. And technology is changing,” says Automotive and Diesel Training Program at Shelton State Community College. Mike Hobson, Head of Department, explained.
Hobson said he has already been contacted by two dealers in the area about the Honda PACT program.
This region includes parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida.
