With his 34th birthday just around the corner, Danny Welbeck once again underlined his importance to Brighton with his contribution to the win at St James’ Park.
More than six years after his 42nd and possibly last England cap, the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker showed his timeless class as the Seagulls got off to a bright start to the season.
His five goals in eight top-flight appearances this season has already equaled last season’s record, and on this evidence no one would object to him reaching double figures for the first time in his career.
Evan Ferguson gained national attention last season when he scored a hat trick against the same opponent.
However, the Republic of Ireland striker has endured an almost 11-month goal drought and Brighton will be hoping Welbeck is not kept out for long with the injury that has since seen him leave the pitch on a stretcher.
