NIH is mandated by Congress to develop and regularly update a strategic plan to provide direction for biomedical research, foster collaboration across the agency, take advantage of scientific opportunities, and advance biomedical science. It is being As the planning process for the next NIH General Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2026-2030 begins soon, the Physicians Committee urges NIH to prioritize human-centered research and conduct comprehensive stakeholder engagement. .

NIH will promote human-centered non-animal research, including acceptance of recommendations from the Advisory Committee to the Director’s Working Group on Advancing the Development and Use of New Alternative Methods to Advance Biomedical Research and New Complement Animal Research. significant progress has been made to advance the Experiment (Supplementary-ARIE) Common Fund Program earlier this year. To build on this progress and take advantage of this scientific opportunity, the NIH-wide strategic plan for 2026-2030 should:

The Strategic Planning Working Group will include experts in human research and other non-animal methods; and stakeholder input, including virtual roundtable discussions, requests for information on the draft Strategic Planning Framework, and requests for feedback on the overall Strategic Plan. We engage in open and comprehensive strategic planning that incorporates: draft strategic plan

The Physicians Committee will continue to oversee the development of the next NIH-wide strategic plan and ensure that human-centered research is prioritized.
