As temperatures begin to drop and a thin layer of cloud cover obscures the sun, it’s that time of year again for the annual Q Fitness & Wellness 5K Run & Walk (QFW5K) on Charlotte’s east side.
Taking place in late October, the QFW5K is a low-stress 5km race open to anyone who wants to take part, from experienced runners to aspiring joggers. The race itself takes place in woodland areas, with gravel running tracks laid out throughout the park. McAlpine Park’s cross-country route consists mainly of flat, easy-access surfaces, perfect for picking up speed if needed, and only one medium-sized hill.
Running the show for the event is Charlotte-based fitness brand Q Fitness & Wellness, catering to members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. Owned and operated by experienced trainer and nutritionist Clem Morris Fraser, QF&W offers affordable services geared towards customers’ personal health and wellness goals, whether they want to work one-on-one with a coach, attend a group session, create a plan to improve their personal diet or consult with an expert.
QFW5K also serves as a fundraiser for local LGBTQ+ organizations, with the majority of proceeds donated at the end of each year’s event.
This year, two organizations are being highlighted: the Lional Lee Jr. Center for Wellness, a grassroots organization that addresses concerns across the Queen City community with education, advocacy and networking, and Time Out Youth, a support center for local LGBTQ+ youth ages 13 to 24. In addition to providing a safe space, they also offer services such as weekly peer support groups, counseling and various forms of therapy.
The Q Fitness & Wellness 5K will take place at McAlpine Creek Park on Oct. 20, 2024 at 11 a.m. The event itself will be held rain or shine, and the entry fee is $30 if you sign up on the 5k website.
