Sports Illustrated hotel coming to fruition in Tuscaloosa

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – The first-of-its-kind Sports Illustrated Hotel is one step closer to becoming a reality.

The Tuscaloosa City Council says developers hope to start moving dirt in January if all goes well.

The hotel is located on Rice Mine Road and Highway 82 and sits on approximately 40 acres along the river. That’s where developers associated with Sports Illustrated Hotels hope to build a nine-story hotel with a mix of hotel rooms, condos, timeshares and retail.

All in all, we’re talking about a $350 million project. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved it and it now goes to the Tuscaloosa City Council. That vote will likely take place by the end of October.

City leaders say they stand ready to answer any questions or concerns about the project.

“Most of those concerns are really around transportation, and the core of it is…’We have concerns about how timeshares work, what that’s going to be like,’ and then other impacts on this community.” “This development has the potential to affect people,” said Tuscaloosa City Councilman Norm Crowe, District 3.

Two public meetings are scheduled before the City Council vote later this month. Councilman Crowe will host a community meeting at Indian Hills Country Club on Tuesday, October 8th at 4:45 p.m.

A public hearing on the issue will also be held during the Tuscaloosa City Council meeting Oct. 15 at City Hall.
