According to the report, the CF recycling market is expected to be worth more than $400 million by 2030, with approximately 30 kilotons of recycled CF consumed annually across various industries.
The report highlights the discrepancies between CF demand growth and advances in the recycling landscape and identifies production capacity gaps. According to the report, global demand for CF has increased approximately 20 times over the past 50 years, outpacing the development of commercial recycling activities, which have only picked up steam in the last decade.
The gap between the CF waste generated annually and existing recycling capacity is so large that even if the nameplate capacity of all carbon fiber recycling companies is combined, approximately 50% of the CF waste generated worldwide remains untreated. The report claims that it will remain the same.
The report categorizes the inflow of waste into two main streams: ‘factory’ waste and ‘end-of-life’ (EoL) waste, and also examines waste generation trends. According to the report, from 2029 onwards, more than 100 kilotonnes of CF waste will be generated annually worldwide, with most of it becoming industrial waste. The report also discusses the ease of recycling and sourcing of both types of waste.
A high-level regional analysis of annual production capacity and consumption of CF is also presented, helping to identify the most waste-producing regions for both types of waste. The report identifies the Asia-Pacific region, primarily led by China, as the most profitable region for CF recycling companies, based on annual production capacity and consumption, along with the presence of large companies.

The advantages and disadvantages of different recycling methods are highlighted, and thermal methods, which are intermediate between mechanical and chemical recycling methods in terms of setup/processing costs and amount of CF recovered, are among the current recycling methods. According to this study, sourcing EoL CF scrap and maintaining high quality and low prices is one of the biggest challenges facing CF recycling companies. Another challenge is the readiness to use recycled CF, and experts contributing to this report had differing opinions on the potential industry-wide acceptance of recycled CF. Some say almost everyone is interested in purchasing recycled materials, while others say the industry first needs to educate potential buyers about the benefits of recycled CF.
Despite the challenges, demand for CF recycling is unlikely to abate for at least the next 20-30 years. Carbon composites are now very popular in industries such as wind and aerospace, and in all parts/structures where composites are abundant. Services currently in operation will reach EoL within the next 30 years. The commercial aerospace industry alone is expected to generate approximately 40 kilotons of end-of-life waste by 2050, according to the report.
Therefore, the use of CF waste will not disappear, nor will the need to be environmentally friendly. Therefore, the ultimate challenge for the industry right now is to first achieve sustainability and then figure out how to turn this sustainability into profitability.
