Survey shows the top three things people hate most about dating

It’s no surprise then that the majority of single people (73% of women and 66% of men) have two to five things they hate on a first date, according to a survey by dating site Zoosk.

Maybe women are easier to annoy (or maybe men are just easier to annoy): 18% of men admit to having five or more things they dislike, while almost a quarter of men have just one thing they dislike or nothing at all.

You might be thinking, “Who cares?” But it’s a big deal. Most women, a whopping 70 percent, turn down a second date because they don’t like it. Half of men do the same. So to help you make a lasting, non-annoying first impression, here are some of the biggest things people hate on a first date, based on Zoosk’s survey of over 1,500 singles.

According to research, the three pet peeves that turn people off most on dates are:

1. Smelly people

Women are sensitive to smells, with 45% of women saying a smelly date is their biggest pet peeve. The second most annoying thing is a tech-obsessed man who can’t put his hands down on his phone, with 22% of votes. Another survey conducted by dating site Match found that 73% of women surveyed don’t like men being constantly on their phones.

Punctuality is also important, with 13 percent of women unable to stand it when their date is late. The final two annoyances on the list seem a bit trivial: “When my date talks too much about themselves” and “When my date bombards me with questions like it’s a job interview,” each receiving just 5 percent of the votes.

2. People who never let go of their cell phone

Men have similar opinions about their biggest dating annoyances. For starters, they wish their women would stop tweeting, texting and updating their Facebook statuses, with 51 percent of men citing “being too obsessed with their phones” as their biggest annoyance.

Ladies, don’t forget to spray on some deodorant and fresh perfume every now and then: 21% of men find it annoying when their date smells bad; 10% of men find it annoying when the date is late, and 7% don’t like being bombarded with questions. And finally, ladies, wear a light layer of eyeshadow on your next date: 7% of men find it extremely annoying when their date wears too much makeup.

3. Rude people

Once you’ve smelled your best and put away your phone, make sure your chosen conversation topic is appropriate. Guys, this means avoiding innuendo: 53 percent of women dislike it when a woman brings up an unwanted topic in a conversation, while only 9 percent of men (not surprisingly) dislike it when a woman makes suggestive comments.
