Fitness icon Richard Simmons, known for his flamboyant personality and dedication to health, was given a touching eulogy by his brother Renee Simmons at a celebration of life on October 5th. Lenny spoke at the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans and told his personal story. About his late brother, who passed away on July 13, 2024, according to PEOPLE.

In an emotional moment, Renee revealed that Richard was buried in his iconic workout clothes, tank top and shorts, paying tribute to the fitness guru’s lifelong dedication to health and wellness.

Lenny addressed the crowd lovingly, noting his brother’s burial clothes: “[Richard]wears a tank top and shorts, like Clark Kent wore under his beautiful clothes.”

“Because we think God has other plans for him, and we believe that he will be dressed in normal clothes to help the saints and angels get in shape. I want to make sure that.”

In a eulogy titled “God’s Plan for Richard Simmons: A Tribute,” Lenny reflected on Richard’s journey from his childhood in New Orleans to his rise to become a fitness icon.

Born Milton Teagle Simmons on July 12, 1948, Richard began his fitness career in Los Angeles in the 1970s after several career changes. According to Renee, Richard began working in art and commercial design after receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University in 1970.

But God “had other plans,” Rennie said. After working as a waiter, Richard became a fitness expert on the soap opera General Hospital, and his career came into the limelight.

Lenny spoke of Richard’s infectious personality, sense of humor, and dedication to helping people improve their health, which became his life’s work.

Lenny’s eulogy brought tears and laughter to those in attendance, remembering Richard’s vibrant life and lasting impact on millions of people. In conclusion, Rennie said, “Richard Simmons will forever be “sweating with the saints”.”

Richard Simmons passed away on July 13, 2024, the day after his 76th birthday. According to reports, Richard suffered a fall at home on July 11, but refused medical help, preferring to spend his birthday at home.

On the morning of July 13, his housekeeper found him unresponsive and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office ruled that Richard’s death was due to blunt force trauma and that heart disease was a contributing factor.

A small funeral was held for him on July 19 at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles, attended only by close family and friends. Although grieving, Lenny thanked the public for the outpouring of support and promised to honor his brother’s legacy with a larger celebration of life in New Orleans.
