Approximately 1 in 10 babies are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after birth in the U.S. As part of NICU Awareness Month, Denver Health celebrated NICU doctors and nurses and the families and babies they care for.
“We love meeting the families after the babies go home and seeing how well they are doing and how much they’ve grown,” said Jacqueline DeSharry, a nurse in Denver Health’s NICU.

Isabella Faliero and her son, Noah, attended the reunion to meet Nicole, the nurse who had to spend the first 48 days of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit.
“It was very hard for me. It was really hard,” Fariello told CBS News Colorado.
Faliello was constantly worried about her newborn baby and was hesitant to leave him alone at the hospital.
“I remember sleeping on the couch here every day for 20 days, and once I met Nicole and connected with her, I went home every night to sleep because I thought, ‘These are the people I know will take care of my baby,'” Faliero explained.
Now, several months after leaving the NICU, Noah is a healthy, happy baby. He was joined in celebration by 12 other NICU graduates, and his mother is so grateful for the compassionate care he received at Denver Health.
