Quarterfinal football continues in the 2024 WPIAL playoffs.
Taking center stage in Thursday’s solo boys tournament will be Class 2A, where the left side of the bracket collapsed in the opener.
Top-seeded South Park advanced to the first round, but the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 8 seeds all struggled.
No. 13 Burrell (9-9) dominated No. 4 Quaker Valley as the Buccaneers won 5-3 in the shootout after two overtimes in a scoreless tie.
No. 12 Seton LaSalle (13-4) also pulled off a surprise victory, defeating No. 5 Charleroi 3-2.
The Cinderella quarterfinals between the Buccaneers and Rebels will be held at West Allegheny at 8 p.m.
No. 1 South Park (17-1-1) defeated Waynesburg 6-0. Now, the Eagles will host No. 9 Central Valley (15-4) at 7 p.m.
The Warriors defeated No. 8 Elizabeth Forward 4-2 on Monday.
The two games to the right of the bracket for boys 2A soccer are:
• No. 2 Avonworth (15-2-2) will play at home against No. 10 Shadyside Academy (12-4-1). The Antelopes defeated McGuffie 7-0 in the first round, and the Bulldogs shut out Mount Pleasant 2-0 on Monday.
• No. 6 North Catholic (15-4) will play No. 3 Deer Lakes (15-2-1) in a rematch of two games from the first round of the season, both at Deer Lakes, at 7 p.m. won 1-0, making it 2-0. The Trojans defeated Southmoreland 6-0 in the opener, and the Lancers also shut out Hopewell 4-0 on Monday.

Last fall, top-seeded North Allegheny faced No. 8 Mount Lebanon in the WPIAL 4A girls soccer playoffs.
It wasn’t easy as both teams were tied until two overtimes before the Tigers defeated the Blue Devils 2-1 on penalty kicks.
The two programs will collide again in the quarterfinals Thursday at North Allegheny at 7 p.m.
The Tigers had a bye in the first round, and the Blue Devils upset No. 5 Norwin in a scoreless 4-3 tie that was decided in a penalty shootout.
The game against Mount Lebanon at North Allegheny is one of three second-round games between powers from the northern part of the division and teams from the southern region.
• No. 1 Peters Township (16-0-1) hosts No. 8 Pine-Richland (12-5) at 7:30 p.m. The Rams defeated Latrobe 4-3 in the opener.
• No. 2 Seneca Valley (12-2-2) earned a bye and will host No. 7 Upper St. Clair at 7 p.m. The Panthers advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Butler.
• The game is a South vs. East game as No. 6 Canon-McMillan (12-3-1) visits No. 3 Penn-Trafford (12-4). The Warriors received a bye in the first round, but Big Mac defeated Hempfield 11-0.
Shutout pitching
The only surprise among the elite eight teams in WPIAL 3A girls soccer is No. 10 seed Bethel Park.
The Blackhawks defeated No. 7 Thomas Jefferson 3-2 in two overtimes.
This was one of just three games in which both teams scored in the 3A opener.
One of the five shutouts belongs to second-seeded and defending 3A champion South Fayette (14-3), which hosts Bethel Park (10-5-3) Thursday at 7 p.m. It’s planned. The Lions defeated Kiski Area 4-0.
The other three games in the 3A quarterfinals are:
• No. 1 Fox Chapel (16-1-1) will play No. 8 Montour (12-4-2) at 7 p.m. The Foxes overwhelmed Indiana 8-0 in the opener. However, the Spartans needed overtime to defeat Franklin, 3-2 in the region.
• No. 4 Plum (16-1) hosts No. 5 Moon (13-3) at 7 p.m. On Monday, the Mustangs shut out Scherer, 3-0, and the Tigers shut out Hampton, 4-0. .
• No. 6 Mars (15-2) is scheduled to play No. 3 West Allegheny (13-3-1) at 6 p.m. Fightin Planets beat Oakland Catholic 3-2, Indians host Laurel Highlands defeated 3-0.

The opening round of the WPIAL girls volleyball playoffs is in the rearview mirror, with both 4A and Class A advancing to the quarterfinals starting Thursday.
The Class 4A Elite 8 consists of three teams each from Round 1 and Round 2, and two teams from Round 4, with the playoff teams in Round 3 watching from afar.
The four games in the 4A quarterfinals are as follows:
• No. 1 North Allegheny (14-1) hosts No. 9 Armstrong (12-4) at 7 p.m. River Hawks defeat Penn-Trafford 3-1, giving the Tigers a first-round bye. Ta.
• 7 p.m., No. 5 Shaler (14-3) visits No. 4 Upper St. Clair (12-5) The Titans beat Latrobe 3-2 in the opener, while the Panthers are in the postseason. A landslide victory over Fox Chapel, 3-0.

The past two WPIAL Class A girls volleyball champions are scheduled to clash in Thursday’s district quarterfinals.
Frazier (13-3), this year’s top seed, won it all in 2022, while its opponent, No. 8 Serra Catholic (12-5), won the gold medal 12 months ago.
The Commodores defeated Rochester 3-0 in the opening game, and the Eagles defeated Beth Center 3-1.
The game begins at 7 p.m. at Frazier.
The remaining three games in the Class A second round are as follows:
• No. 12 California (9-5) plays No. 4 St. Joseph (16-3) at 7 p.m. The Trojans dominated No. 5 Carmichaels 3-0 in the playoff opener, while the Spartans They defeated Union by the same score.
• No. 2 Eden Christian Academy (19-2) faces No. 7 Bishop Canevin (9-7) at North Catholic at 6 p.m. Warriors beat Trinity Christian, Crusaders take on Aquinas Academy We defeated them with the same score, 3-0.

The 2024 WPIAL field hockey playoffs continue Thursday with the Class 3A and 2A semifinals.
In Class 3A, top-seeded Pine-Richland hosts Norwin at 7 p.m. and is considered the favorite to win its sixth consecutive district championship. In the other game, No. 3 North Allegheny will visit No. 2 Mount Lebanon at 7 p.m.
In 2A, top-seeded Peters Township, a 3A runner-up a year ago, will host No. 4 Latrobe at 6 p.m.
