Game 1 of the World Series lived up to the hype of the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Yankees Fall Classic, with Freddie Freeman as the hero.
The Dodgers first baseman hit a walk-off home run with the bases loaded in the 10th inning, capping off a dramatic game. The Yankees were leading 3-2 in the top of the 10th inning when Freeman hit a monster 423-foot home run, giving his team a 6-3 victory and a 1-0 lead in the World Series. .
This was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
Freeman has played with a limp throughout the postseason since spraining his ankle in the final week of the regular season. He didn’t hit a single extra-base hit in the National League game and sat out some games to rest his ankle, but he did hit a grand slam and a triple on Friday.
The play was very reminiscent of Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series against the Oakland Athletics. In both cases, the injured first baseman hit a home run. Gibson’s game still resonates in Dodgers history, and if the Dodgers can do that in the next few games, this one will too.
There was a lot of drama before the Grand Slam. The Dodgers scored first, but the Yankees countered with a huge home run by Giancarlo Stanton. Both starting pitchers Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty got off to a good start, but Flaherty was eliminated.
Shohei Ohtani led off the tying run with a double in the eighth inning, got the third run on an error, and scored on Mookie Betts’ sacrifice fly. The Yankees almost took the lead in the ninth inning, but a fan caught Gleyber Torres’ fly ball and it was ruled a double.
Then, in the top of the 10th inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s timely hit gave the Yankees the lead. He singled off the Dodgers’ top reliever, Blake Treinen, stole second and third, then scored on Anthony Volpe’s fielder’s choice RBI. It could have been a big win for the Yankees, but it ended up being a historic win for the Dodgers.
The series now moves on to Game 2 on Saturday, with Los Angeles’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto and New York’s Carlos Rodon scheduled to start.
