The University of California (UC) recently selected Labviva, the leading AI procurement platform for life sciences, to enhance procurement efficiency and research-related purchasing across all UC campuses. Labviva’s first deployment will occur at UC San Diego in 2022, with UC Merced going live in September 2024.

UC needed a solution that could connect to the procurement technologies of its 10 campuses, six academic medical centers, and three national laboratories. Labviva’s intuitive platform can operate as a standalone solution or directly integrate into leading procurement systems, including Jaggaer, Oracle Procurement Cloud, SAP Ariba, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Coupa. Additionally, Labviva helps UC’s research operations optimize purchasing, speed fulfillment, maintain compliance, and improve visibility into the procurement process.

By next year, UC aims to allocate 25% of eligible spend to certified small and diverse businesses. Labviva’s highly configurable platform also allows each UC campus to customize search results and specify which suppliers to feature and when, allowing purchasing professionals to make research choices that best align with UC’s values and goals. Labviva’s real-time purchasing analytics dashboard graphs spend by category, vendor, user, time period and project, providing accurate reporting on UC spending.

The UC agreement with Labviva has an initial term of three years, with a two-year renewal option at UC’s discretion. Additionally, the award to Labviva, a certified small business, highlights UC’s commitment to supporting small and diverse businesses.

Important Quotes:

“Labviva streamlines the purchasing process by providing 1:1 product comparisons between vendors, price and delivery comparisons, responsive search results, and supplemental information such as peer-reviewed papers and molecular structure breakdowns. This intelligent solution empowers faculty, researchers and staff to make informed purchasing decisions, aligning campus needs with UC’s financial goals and responsibilities.”

-Megan Torres, Vice Chancellor and Chief Acquisition Officer, University of California, Merced

“Labviva is leveraging technology to make connections and build partnerships across the entire procurement ecosystem to accelerate the pace of life sciences research. Real-time analytics and AI-driven product recommendations will help UC systems manage spend, improve product selection and increase insight and visibility into trends.”

– Siamak Baharloo, CEO of Labviva

“Since integrating Labviva into our e-commerce platform in 2022, UC San Diego has been able to significantly improve the shopping experience for end-users on campus. The tool allows shoppers to quickly find products, compare prices at a glance, and make easy repeat purchases. We have implemented several improvements, including in search results, inventory visibility, and influencing shopping behavior, to maximize cost savings. Additionally, utilizing small business suppliers like Labviva embodies our goal of supporting small businesses, and the feature encourages shoppers to use small, sustainable and diverse suppliers.”

– Greg Mueller, Senior Manager of Strategic Sourcing, University of California, San Diego

“Labviva will help UC Procurement transform how the University procures goods and services, maximizing benefits to the system while improving quality and service to our campus partners. This e-Procurement upgrade demonstrates our commitment to best-in-class procurement practices, investments in the latest technology and fostering strategic supplier partnerships to source the highest quality products and services at the best value.”

-Paul Williams, Vice Chancellor for Systemwide Procurement and Chief Procurement Officer, University of California
