The emerging sports program for women, overseen by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, was established in 1994 based on recommendations from the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force. Since then, five sports have become championship sports (beach volleyball, rowing, ice hockey, water polo and bowling), and women’s wrestling is set to become the sixth sport pending affiliation approval in the NCAA Conference in 2025. In 2022-23, emerging sports accounted for more than 4,200 participation opportunities for student-athletes, according to NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Data.
