CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office will be holding its third hiring and recruiting event this year, providing opportunities for anyone interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
This is the last One-Stop-Shop event being held this year. According to those involved, the previous events have been a great success. The two events received more than 60 applications, and they were able to hire at least half of the applicants.
We are currently seeking candidates to fill our vacant Deputy Sheriff and Deputy Detention positions. Applicants must pass the Nelson-Denny reading, writing and comprehension test. They must then complete a physical ability test within 2 minutes and 6 seconds, both of which will be administered at our hiring and recruiting events. The next step in the hiring process is a polygraph test and an interview with Sheriff’s Office leadership.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office has had a lot of success in recruiting new candidates through a variety of tests, including the physical fitness test described here. (Charleston County Sheriff’s Office)
The event will feature displays of the various specialties within the sheriff’s office for those who are unsure of what career they would like to pursue. In addition to showcasing the various departments within the sheriff’s office, the event will also feature tours of the jail to help attendees get an idea of where they might want to work and what they might like to do.
This is your chance to learn more and find the right job for you. Requirements vary depending on the role, but you can apply to work in the Custody Division from the age of 18. No university degree is required, giving you the opportunity to start your career and get involved in the sector early.
Lt. Jackie Woodall is a recruiter and part of the Community Engagement Unit and spoke about the need for events like this.
“As with many professions and jobs today, we need highly qualified candidates. We are always looking for people who are interested in giving back to the community and contributing to the community they work in. We are looking for people who are willing to work in an environment of teamwork and who can contribute back to society,” Woodall said.
Woodall encourages anyone interested to come and take a look.
“Every day there’s something different, there’s a challenge in front of me and I love being able to contribute to the community that I serve,” Woodall said. “I get to be out there every day and see the people that I’m helping deal with a crisis and have contact with them every day. It’s very fulfilling and a great career.”
The adoption event will be held at the Al Cannon Detention Center, located at 3841 Leeds Avenue. The event is two days long, Friday from 3pm to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to noon. On-the-day registration and participation is welcome. Pre-registration can be completed here.
Woodall said he encourages people to prepare and take practice tests in advance, and while participants are given the opportunity to retake the test if they fail a particular area, it’s best to come prepared.
