As technology advances, so does the need for surgical technologists in the medical field.
“We’ve experienced staffing shortages,” said Dr. Rene Luna, DHR Health obstetrician-gynecologist and director of robotics, “and we realized that during COVID. We could feel the impact because our surgical assistants are running.”
DHR Health hopes to fill that gap by showing students what the work entails and giving them experience in the field.
“There is a high demand for surgical technologists, especially in the Valley,” said Marissa Gonzalez, TSTC Surgical Technology Program Instructor. “Currently, there are approximately 50 job openings in facilities throughout the Valley that offer surgical services.”
On a recent Wednesday, a group of more than 70 students from McAllen Independent School District and TSTC were given the opportunity to test drive the Da Vinci 5, a state-of-the-art robotic surgery system.
This is a tool that future surgical technologists hope to help surgeons use.
