When you join Cowley College’s EMS program, you will embark on a journey to a fulfilling career dedicated to saving lives and serving the community. Cowley College’s EMS education program prepares you for a rewarding career in emergency medical services (EMS). Available programs include Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), and Paramedic. Students learn critical patient management skills and knowledge to provide emergency care to patients experiencing a medical or trauma emergency. This training will be improved with the relocation of the Paramedic and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) programs to the Sumner campus. EMT and Emergency Medical Response (EMR) courses will continue in Winfield, Wellington, and Mulvane. EMS professionals are essential to the delivery of emergency care in pre-hospital and in-hospital settings. Salaries range from $20,000 to $75,000 depending on location and role, with many agencies offering signing-on bonuses of up to $20,000.
With demand for EMTs and paramedics on the rise, employment will grow 5% between 2022 and 2032. This growth will mean approximately 18,100 job openings per year, driven by new opportunities and the need to replace retiring professionals. A career in EMS offers both stability and the chance to make a big impact in a crisis situation.
Cowley College’s EMS program combines practical experience with fundamental theoretical knowledge to provide a strong foundation in emergency medicine. Students will develop skills in communication, staying calm under pressure and patient management.
We are excited to relocate our Paramedic and AEMT programs to the Sumner Campus and open our new Prehospital Simulation Center in the Short Building. This facility will increase our training capabilities by allowing us to conduct high-fidelity simulations in realistic settings. While the Paramedic program will be delivered on both the Wellington and WSU Tech campuses, AEMT classes will only be offered in Wellington.
The Simulation Center will be a premier resource for EMS students and local partners, offering advanced AV recording, patient simulators, and VR technology for immersive training. The Center also supports local EMS partners through competency validation and continuing education.
“We are excited to be relocating our EMS program to the Sumner campus, where we can continue to grow our program and prepare people for the profession. We have great staff, resources and space to continue to grow and help prepare our students to be the best paramedics in their communities,” said Sumner Campus Director Zach Cooper.
Kansas residents are eligible to apply for the Kansas Promise Act Scholarship, which covers the cost of tuition, fees, books and supplies. Additionally, numerous undergraduate scholarships and the Cowley Foundation Scholarship are available to students in the Paramedic program. This financial support makes our program accessible and allows students to focus on their studies. Additionally, Cowley College offers clear pathways from the EMT program to advanced certifications such as the AEMT and Paramedic programs, helping you advance in your EMS career.
