BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – In a historic investment towards improving the health of Texans, the Health Resources and Services Administration announced it will invest approximately $8.8 million in expanding mental health and substance use disorder services in 15 communities across the state.
One of those organizations is the Brazos Valley Community Action Agency, also known as HealthPoint. CEO Teri Sabella appeared on First News at Four on Monday and said HealthPoint is excited to receive the funding.
“This was a competitive grant application. As you know, there is a great need for behavioral health services across the country and especially in our region. We were able to provide survey data that shows that among adult patients in our service area, approximately 20% reported feeling mentally unwell for 14 days in the past month and up to 7% of those surveyed reported experiencing a major depressive episode in the past year. So we know the need is great,” Sabella said.
Because HealthPoint is a federally qualified health center, care is available regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.
“So if you have health insurance, we’re happy to use your health insurance to see you. If you don’t have health insurance, we’ll put you in an entitlement program, which often has a sliding scale so you can pay based on your income,” Sabella added.
