MEF research cited in parliamentary inquiry into Islamist groups

PHILADELPHIA – September 24, 2024 – Rep. Jason Smith, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, cited the Middle East Forum (MEF) investigation in a recent letter to IRS Commissioner Daniel Wuerfel, calling for an investigation into eight tax-exempt organizations that are alleged to have engaged in activities inconsistent with their charitable status.

Specifically, MEF’s work was cited for:

“The Middle East Forum has been committed to investigating and uncovering extremist groups or those abusing their tax-exempt status,” said Middle East Forum Director Greg Roman. “We are pleased that our research will inform Congress’ work to provide increased scrutiny of these organizations.”

Sam Westrop, director of MEF’s Islamist monitory, added: “The citation of our work in a parliamentary investigation underlines the importance of continued vigilance and thorough investigation of organisations that may be misusing their status as charitable organisations to promote extremist ideology.”

The Middle East Forum’s research aims to advance American interests in the Middle East and defend Western values ​​from Middle Eastern threats.
