The San Francisco 49ers are hoping their receiver room isn’t depleted going into Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. With Brandon Aiyuk already out for the season, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings could be out, and tight end George Kittle is likely to play.
Samuel was hospitalized with pneumonia on Sunday, but is recovering. He practiced Thursday, which is a good sign, but head coach Kyle Shanahan wasn’t ready to declare Samuel available for the Cowboys game.
“Well, the fact that he was able to go out there and try something is good news to me,” Shanahan told KNBR’s Tom Tolbert and Adam Copeland. “I remember getting pneumonia in my early 20s, and about a week later I couldn’t even walk down the stairs.
“So, there are different types of levels of that. He’s doing much better, but what I’ve learned is that pneumonia is a little different. Although he had a little bit of unusual symptoms. , he’s doing well enough.”He was able to practice today, so I hope he continues to improve and I hope he can help us on Sunday.”
Jennings is suffering from a hip injury and is not a candidate for going on injured reserve, but he is listed as questionable and likely won’t suit up this week.
“We expect him to be back after the bye week,” Shanahan said of Jennings. “I haven’t ruled him out for this week yet, but it’s safe to say he’s questionable. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t come back after the bye week.”
Meanwhile, Kittle, who is dealing with a sprained foot, participated in Thursday’s practice in limited numbers.
Tagovailoa cleared to return against Cardinals
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has cleared concussion protocol and is scheduled to play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, head coach Mike McDaniel said Friday.
Tagovailoa returned to practice on a limited basis on Wednesday and played the full game, including contact, on Thursday. This will be his first practice since suffering a concussion in Week 2, and his third time in two years.
After his status was upgraded, Tagovailoa met with an independent neurological consultant and was cleared from the concussion protocol to return to action.
Daniels, mid-game decision for coach
Jaden Daniels will make a decision during the game after returning to practice after injuring his ribs in Week 7.
“We’re going to take the next 48 hours to see how he feels, but he really stepped up today,” Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said.
Daniels was ejected in the first quarter of last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers after taking several hard shots after running with the ball on Washington’s first drive of the game. He grabbed his ribs as he stood up after being tackled and was in pain on the sideline, working with an athletic trainer.
Daniels told reporters Friday that he feels good and “I want to play, but it’s not my decision.”
Toe injury plagues Bucky Irving
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were without running back Bucky Irving for the second day in a row during Thursday’s practice, and he is listed as questionable for Sunday.
The rookie running back has been a key part of Tampa’s offense this season. Irving has gained 351 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns in three of the past four games.
If Irving is unavailable for the game against the Atlanta Falcons, Ratchard White and Sean Tucker will take over the backfield duties.
